A few additional points that I believe should be added to the "Tips for Millennials" column.

****
Business principles are the same regardless of social motivation. If a company doesn't address profitability and sustainable revenue issues, it will not be around to assist in any social causes.

Some days the person in the big office down the hall is your friend and mentor, and some days he/she is your boss. You may not always understand why. Don't take it personally.

If work were always fun, you'd do it for free. Do the tedious and irrelevant anyway -without complaint- and you will go further, faster.

Look for the big picture before opening your mouth. You should not cause others to undervalue your intellect and ability by making uninformed comments.

Avoid the "buy me this" approach to problem solving. If you actually need a tool, service, or other cost item, be prepared to justify it thoroughly. The "old guys" aren't against spending money -they're against wasting money.

Social media is "social". You are not being paid to be social. That being said, using social media to connect business contacts and expand opportunities for the enterprise are a new trick you can teach an old dog. Emphasize "return on investment" rather than how cool tweeting your new bff is.

Some days getting the job done is the most important thing in all the world. On those days, set your jaw and soldier through. The "bosses" will remember that on the days when there is some flexibility.

You will decide to work for people who you will sometimes despise. You may find that you learn the most valuable lessons in life from those people, but it may be years later before you know it.

Burning bridges is always a bad idea. Always.
***

Thanks Arati for this inciteful article. Even if we "old dogs" don't always see things the same way, we have a responsibility both to our companies and ourselves to adapt to a changing world. Of course, the up and coming workers have that same responsibility.

Larry S. With experience in three different fields and 20+ years of diverse experience, finding the right job opportunity can be difficult--and reformatting one's resume from a traditional date-driven format to a functional format can be downright tricky! Sigh...but I'm doing it!

Since I was laid off in September 2009 from an engineering position, I've been working contract as a Marcomm technical writer/editor. I thought about your suggestion to create an "I Want, You Have" list of skills and have decided to do just that. Although I am a non-PE'ed mechanical engineer, I have tons of IT software and engineering technical writing/editing experience, especially in Marcomm. I've been checking out Brookwoods' positions--maybe I'll just submit my new resume and skills comparison list and see what happens! One never knows, does one?!

Thanks for a really good, to-the-point article that hit home with me!

Linda Maus
Technical Writer/Editor
Schlumberger Oilfield Marketing Communications

Re: life in the recruiting chair

A handsome man goes online and searches google for "fantistic in bed" and the results show the following:

1 - your website - utilizing SEO relevant terms - properly indexed - with fresh content and thougt leadership about being fantastic in bed

2 - a recent blog entry authored by you about how to be fantastic in bed (including trackback to blog entry by Gartner Research VP on same topic)

3 - your linkedin profile which has multiple recommendations from others confirming that you have been fantastic in bed in the past (check the group you created for others who are fantastic in bed) - ditto for facebook....

4 - a tweet about how you were not really that great in bed - followed by a retween where you engaged the person on this point to discover the tweet was really about someone else (case closed - reputation still intact)

5 - a shideshare presentation where you outline the 5 key steps to becoming fantastic in bed (make sure to forward to a friend)

and finally...

3 - a you tube video of you being fantastic in bed!!!

That is called Digital Marketing.

Re: diet for people under stress

If you like this diet, then you'll love this cookie recipe...

Jose Cuervo Cookies

1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup of brown sugar
lemon juice
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups of dried fruit

1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequilla

Sample the Cuervo to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Cuervo again, to be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink.

Turn on the electric mixer...Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add one teaspoon of sugar...Beat again. At this point it's best to make sure the Cuervo is still OK, try another cup ...just in case.

Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit, Pick the frigging fruit off floor... Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.

Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Who giveshz a sheet. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven.

Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the dishwasher.

Re: progresssive rules for the dogs

Hey, John, you should try observing these rules with a 100+ pound dog! My black lab, Sadie, is a bigger bed hog than Arnold Ziffle. Her constantly wagging tail is more dangerous than a Jedi's light saber, especially for - shall we say -- the male anatomy, which happens to be at the same height as Sadie's tail. Since we adopted Sadie (or rather, she adopted us), we have not had to wash a single dish, pot or pan. (Just kidding, Mom! I DO wash the dishes. Sometimes.) Sadie protects us well, since anyone who would walk around the house in the dead of night will trip over her and get hurt in the fall. Saddly, I know this from personal experience. But she is generous with her love and devoted beyond belief, so that makes it all worthwhile.

Re: sing for hope

This was a great event!
